CTR1 Aaron Kunst, Emily Foxworthy, Quinn Winchell, Robin Donatello, Naomi Stamper, Stephanie Bianco NULL CSU Basic Needs Training & Resource Center: Elevating and Supporting System-wide Basic Needs Efforts

Background: Most CSU campuses do not have sustainable basic needs programming in place. With every organization, there is staff turnover and a college campus is no exception. Without having resources and training in place the knowledge and ability to continue the momentum of these vital student services are potentially lost.

Methods: A pre and post-intervention basic needs assessment investigated levels of success of the BNTRC. The pre-survey evaluated current basic needs services and campus requested future basic needs services across all 23 CSU campuses. This 51-item Qualtrics survey was tested for content validity, readability, and revised as necessary. Participation recruitment included: a request from the CSU Office of the Chancellor to the basic need point person on each campus, email requests from CHC to the CSU campuses, and reminders to participate via email and phone.

Results: From pre to post-intervention, the BNTRC cross-compared baseline basic needs evaluations with N=13 CSU campuses. The most impactful results showed a 1) 30 percent increase in food pantry safety programs, 2) 17 percent increase in implementation of CalFresh Food EBT transactions friendly stores on campus, 3) 13 percent decrease in county social service department campus partnerships.

Conclusion: System-wide efforts such as the CSU BNTRC resource website are replicable strategies to save Basic Needs staff or campus partner time and money while also improving services long-term. By being a repository for best practice resources, they help align efforts across all campuses state-wide.
